Program Requirements >> Apprenticeship Project

Each student must not only participate in the research process, but must document that experience with a written research paper.

  1. The student should, in consultation with a project advisor, develop a research proposal for the apprenticeship project.

  2. the student should form an apprenticeship committee composed of an apprenticeship advisor, one other faculty member, and one student who has completed the apprenticeship requirement.

  3. The student should obtain approval of each member of the apprenticeship committee prior to conducting the proposed research.

  4. In conjunction with the project advisor, the student should conduct the study and write a report of publishable quality. Students should enroll in CEP 995 while completing the research.

  5. The student should hold a public, oral defense of the project. After this presentation, most students perform additional tasks to improve the quality of the final paper, and apprenticeship committee members sign the Research Apprenticeship form.

You should begin to think about and discuss ideas for your apprenticeship with your advisor and other faculty during your first year of study. Most students complete their apprenticeship projects during their second or third year of study. Students must complete the apprenticeship project prior to taking comprehensive examinations.
